Investigation Equipment

Here are some of the basic items:

1. Notebook and pen (investigation notes)
2. Extra Batteries for equipment
3. Flashlight
4. Measuring tape
5. Extra films and recording tapes
6. 35mm Camera or a Digital Camera (with the Digital camera preferably rated 1 megapixal or higher)
7. Motion Detectors (infrared sensors)
8. Video Camera
9. Audio Recorders

GHOST DETECTING DEVICES

35mm & Digital cameras-  These are probably the most widely used tools of the Ghost hunter mainly because they show visual indications of the spiritual presence.  There are presently a number of debates going on about the accuracy of 33mm film compared to digital media. If you do your homework, you'll see where 35mm film speeds successfully used for investigations can range from 100asa to whatever. It is suggested that for digital photography that the camera should be rated at least 1megapixal or higher. Today we have cameras available that are rated over 3 but the prices are still up there yet. We will be using both in our investigations.

Audio recorders- These will be set up during our investigations to record EVPs or Electronic Voice Phenomena which is a process whereby the voice or voices of the dead are embedded onto magnetic recording tape. As you will be able to see by researching other investigation sites on the internet, EVPs are kind of a gray area. I myself believe it is possible to record these anomalies or voices but question the validity of many of those presently being interpreted as such.

ELECTRO-MAGNETIC FIELD METERS-  This is the most common device used by ghost hunters today and is considered to be the most reliable. Electronic devices have been adapted to ghost hunting as a way to give confirmation of our instincts in the field. Researchers believe that ghosts, and paranormal energy, are electro-magnetic in origin. The energy that a ghost gives off, whether it be a conscious spirit or a residual image, causes a disruption in a location's magnetic field and thus, becomes detectable using measuring devices.

DIGITAL THERMAL SCANNER-  This is another kind of electronic device that I can recommend that is also referred to as an Infrared Non-Contact Thermometer. This device can track down a ghostly, or paranormal, presence by taking instant readings from the air and detecting any changes in temperature that might be sudden or extreme. The device detects "cold spots" (unexplained temperature variances) that often signal that a ghost is present. The ghost uses the energy in that spot to manifest itself and in return, produces a cold mass. The ghost may be invisible to the naked eye but still detectable by these devices.
 mistakes.

Compass- For those who cannot afford the electronic devices, the compass can be purchased in any sporting goods department in your area. It is believed that carrying one of these devices into a haunted location will direct you to the ghost or energy field and then spin while the field is present.

Dowsing Rods- Here is another device that has been around for many years and is used to detect underground water sources. No one knows how it works, but it does. Dowsing rods are usually constructed of brass and are bent into an L-shape. By holding them loosely in each hand, they can point the way towards water. Genealogists also use them to discover unmarked graves in cemeteries and they have also been used to determine the sex of an unborn baby. In ghost hunting, the short ends of the rods are held loosely in each hand and they are said to sway in the direction of an energy field, pointing the way to it. When the ghost is discovered, they are said to cross.

Motion Sensor Devices- Good for securing active locations from interference.

Ion Detector- Expensive, but nice detection device that measures atmospheric disturbances.

Geiger Counter- Nice piece of equipment that also picks up anomalous activity.
